Penang State Mosque

Penang State Mosque is a modern place of worship in George Town featuring a distinctive single minaret at the intersection of Jalan Masjid Negeri. The structure combines Western modernist architectural elements with concrete surfaces and geometric shapes.

Construction began in 1977 and was completed in 1980 when the Sultan performed the official opening. The project emerged as an expression of modern Malaysia during a period of urban growth in George Town.

This mosque serves as the main religious hub for George Town's Muslim community and shapes the city's skyline with its contemporary design. It hosts daily prayers, religious gatherings, and community events.

The mosque welcomes visitors daily, though certain areas are reserved during prayer times. Respectful clothing is expected and shoes must be removed before entering the main prayer hall.

A Filipino architect designed this building drawing inspiration from a famous cathedral in South America, giving the mosque an unexpected international connection. This stylistic bridge between regions makes it a noteworthy example of architectural dialogue across continents.
