Wat Buppharam, Thai Buddhist temple in George Town, Malaysia.
Wat Buppharam is a Buddhist temple in the northern part of Jalan Perak in George Town, Malaysia, with a prayer hall connected to a chedi shrine. The grounds also hold an ubosot sanctuary flanked by naga statues and a mondop structure with a square base built to resemble a rice pagoda.
Phothan Srikheaw founded the temple in 1942, during World War II, laying the foundation for a Buddhist community in George Town. From that point on, the site grew into a gathering place for local worshippers.
The temple brings together Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism in a single space. Statues of Kuan Yin, Ganesha, and Buddhist deities stand side by side, showing how several spiritual traditions coexist here.
The temple sits on Jalan Perak and is easy to reach on foot from central George Town. Visitors are expected to remove their shoes before entering certain areas, so comfortable footwear makes the visit easier.
The temple holds a century-old Lifting Buddha statue that visitors try to raise while thinking of a personal wish. The ease or difficulty of lifting it is said to reveal whether that wish will come true.
