City Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium on Lorong Kulit in George Town, Penang, with a capacity of 25,000. It has a football pitch ringed by an athletic track and concrete spectator stands, and it is the oldest stadium still in use in Malaysia.
Construction of the City Stadium began on 1 October 1945, just after the Second World War, and the ground opened in 1948 as the Penang Island National Stadium. The British government expanded it in 1950 and renovated it again in 1953. It was later renamed the City Stadium, and after the Penang FA briefly moved to Batu Kawan, the state team returned here in 2011.
Penang F.C. supporters are known for the "Keramat Roar", the loud home backing named after the Jalan Dato Keramat area beside the ground. The stadium sits on Lorong Kulit, next to the Lorong Kulit flea market, so match days mix football crowds with market browsing.
The stadium is situated between Jalan Dato Kramat and Jalan Perak and can be reached by several bus lines. Check ahead to confirm if events are scheduled for the day you plan to visit.
The complex includes a dining area called Astaka Stadium Bandaraya where multiple food stalls serve Malaysian dishes. This food venue is built right into the sports complex and draws visitors who come to eat before or after watching matches.
