St. Peter's Church, Malacca, Catholic church in Melaka City, Malaysia

St. Peter's Church stands on Jalan Bendahara, its facade combining eastern and western forms with a hint of Portuguese baroque, and the Portuguese Republic crest worked into the masonry above the front balcony of the presbytery. Inside are the original high altar, stained glass windows, a barrel-vaulted ceiling and two side altars. Fourteen tombstones from 1736 to the 1900s lie within the church, most near the altar.

The church was built in 1710 on land donated by a Dutch convert, emerging after decades when the Portuguese community faced persecution during Dutch colonial rule. It was reconstructed and expanded over time to serve the growing congregation.

The church takes its name from St. Peter, patron saint of fishermen, chosen by its first priest, Fr. Domingos Monteiro. The Irmaos De Igreja, a fraternity of brothers, still carries out the devotion to the alabaster statue of the Lord Before the Resurrection in the transept dedicated to Christ's Passion, a practice inherited from the Augustinian church of St Lawrence.

The church stands on Jalan Bendahara, with the main entrance facing the street. The 14 tombstones, dating from 1736 to the 1900s, lie inside the building: most near the altar, one in the left transept, one behind the bell tower and the largest behind the left pillar of the choir gallery. The 2024 marble statue of St Michael is in the garden beside the right transept.

The church houses a bell cast in Goa in 1608, salvaged from an earlier church structure that was destroyed during Dutch occupation. This bell is one of the oldest objects on the site and a rare reminder of the early colonial period.
