Istana Jahar, Royal museum in Kota Bharu, Malaysia.
Istana Jahar is a wooden palace in Kota Bharu featuring polished hardwood floors and ornately carved wall panels across its two stories. The structure displays traditional Malay architectural craftsmanship with details visible throughout each room.
The palace was built in 1887 when Sultan Muhammad II commissioned it as a residence for his grandson Raja Bendahara Long Kundor. This construction reflected the importance of the site within the ruling family's history.
The building displays traditional weapons, royal regalia, and ceremonial garments belonging to Kelantan rulers. Visitors can trace the lineage and roles of the ruling family through objects and genealogical records on display.
The building is open from Saturday through Wednesday during daytime hours and spans two stories with multiple rooms to explore. Comfortable footwear helps when navigating the wooden floors and staircases between levels.
The palace took its name from a jahar tree that grew on the grounds during construction. This tree became so identified with the site that it inspired the building's name.
