Terengganu State Museum, Museum complex in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.
The Terengganu State Museum is a large museum complex built on a hill in Kuala Terengganu, made up of several exhibition buildings, traditional timber houses, and outdoor areas. The collections cover weapons, textiles, ceramics, boats, and fishing tools from the region.
The museum opened in 1996 and grew into one of the largest museum grounds in Malaysia. Its collection was built from contributions across the state, bringing together objects that trace the maritime and craft traditions of the east coast.
The traditional houses on the grounds were brought from different parts of Terengganu and reassembled here, showing how local building styles varied from one area to another. Walking through them gives a clear sense of how interior spaces were arranged and used in daily life.
The grounds are spread across a broad hilltop, so wearing comfortable shoes and giving yourself a good half-day is a good idea. Signs along the paths are clear, and shaded rest spots are easy to find throughout the site.
Within the grounds there is a botanical garden that includes a section devoted entirely to traditional Malay medicinal plants. These plants were relied on for health and healing across the region for centuries and are still labeled and accessible to visitors today.
