Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge, Draw bridge at Terengganu River, Malaysia
The Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge is a movable bridge at the mouth of the Terengganu River in Malaysia, designed to open when large vessels need to pass through. Four tall towers support the structure and are connected by two pedestrian skywalks that offer views over the river and the city.
Construction began in the mid-2010s as part of an infrastructure program for the east coast of Malaysia and was completed after around five years. The structure was the country's first movable bridge project on this scale.
The name recalls the British model, yet the structure follows its own appearance with four pylons lit in changing colors at night, marking the river mouth. Locals stroll along footpaths on both sides and use the area as a meeting point during warm evenings.
Pedestrians can use the walkways and the two upper bridges to cross the river while enjoying views over the water and the nearby coast. A visit is especially worthwhile at sunset, when the lighting turns on.
The two elevated pedestrian bridges house a small gallery displaying works by regional artists and a restaurant that offers views down to the river mouth on clear days. The spaces are arranged so that you can watch the roadway opening while dining or viewing the artworks.
