Pic de Tristagne, Mountain peak in Pyrenees, France.
Pic de Tristagne is a mountain summit in the Pyrenees that forms the natural border between France and Andorra. The peak reaches approximately 2,900 meters (9,500 feet) and features glacial lakes on its southern face.
The name comes from the Latin term 'tria stagna', meaning three lakes, referring to the water bodies shaped by ice age activity. Quaternary glaciations carved out these lakes and molded the peak's distinctive features over time.
Since 2017, the summit features a metal sculpture of estripagecs, part of artist Pere Moles' initiative to mark six significant peaks in Ordino parish.
The climb typically starts from Coma d'Arc parking area at around 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) in the Ordino-Arcalis ski resort. The ascent involves several hours of hiking through changing mountain terrain and requires standard alpine fitness.
The rocks date from the Cambrian-Ordovician period and have been transformed into micaschist through metamorphic processes. This geological composition creates the distinctive appearance of the mountain as visitors see it today.
