Pica Roja

Pica Roja is a mountain peak straddling the Pyrenees border between Spain and France, made of sandstone and lutite rock formations. The summit rises prominently above the surrounding valleys and serves as a natural dividing line between the two nations.

The peak holds two distinct names reflecting its position on the border: Pic de la Soucarrane in French territory and Pica Roja in Spanish territory. This dual nomenclature developed from how each nation's local populations historically identified landmarks within their own boundaries.

Local shepherds have utilized the mountain paths near Roumazet stream for centuries, establishing traditional livestock management practices in the high-altitude meadows.

The climb starts from the Orris du Carla parking area and follows established hiking trails through high pastures toward the summit. Bring sturdy hiking boots, water, and weather protection, as conditions at altitude can change rapidly.

Two alpine lakes sit at different elevations below the peak: Etang de Roumazet at lower altitude and Etang de la Soucarrane higher up. These water bodies shape the landscape and serve as natural stopping points for hikers making their way to the summit.
