Qal‘ah-ye Wakīl

Qal'ah-ye Wakīl is a stone fortress on a hill outside the center of Kabul in Kabul Province, Afghanistan. The thick walls form a rectangular structure with towers at the corners, its design shaped by centuries of weather and time.

The castle was built several centuries ago as a defensive structure to protect the city from attackers. Over time it became a place where local rulers made decisions and held meetings.

The name Wakīl refers to a deputy or representative, reflecting the fortress's former role as a seat of local power. Today locals visit the site to connect with their past and enjoy the quiet on the hill.

The hill is reachable from different parts of the city, and a footpath leads up to the fortress. From the top you can enjoy a wide view over Kabul and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The corner towers once served to spot enemies from far away and warn soldiers in time. Today they are popular photo spots for visitors who want to capture the historical appearance of the site.
