Kabul Zoo, Public zoo in western Kabul, Afghanistan
Kabul Zoo is a sprawling facility in western Kabul housing lions, bears, wolves, and other animals across landscaped grounds. The compound includes distinct areas designed to accommodate different species and their needs.
The zoo was founded in 1967 with German support as a facility for the city. It sustained damage during the fighting of the 1990s but gradually recovered its operations afterward.
The zoo functions as a weekend gathering place where families spend time together in an open space. Staff members develop personal bonds with the animals they care for, which visitors can observe in their daily interactions.
Weekends tend to draw larger crowds, so visiting on other days offers a more relaxed experience. The grounds are spread out, so plan time to walk through different sections comfortably.
A bronze statue of a famous lion named Marjan stands at the entrance, commemorating a remarkable survival. The animal survived a grenade attack and came to represent resilience for local people.
