Sama Tower, High-rise building on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Sama Tower is a 51-storey tower block on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, completed in late 2009 at a height of 194 metres. Its exposed concrete frame rises as one rectangular mass, with open floor plates, horizontal slab edges and a grid of columns and beams; bands of reddish-brown material mark several floors and a green panel section sits high on the left. Metal crane masts project from the top.
Construction of the tower started in 2006 as a planned 75-story project, but aviation regulations required a reduction in its final height. The building was completed in 2009 and has since become part of Dubai's skyline.
The tower's name, Sama, is Arabic for "sky", and it is also known as Al Durrah Tower or Al Durrah Tower II, the name under which it was first proposed. The building stands along Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai's main north-south artery, where its concrete frame and reddish-brown floor bands are visible from the road.
The World Trade Center Metro station nearby provides convenient access to the building on foot. Parking is available across seven floors for both residents and visitors to the tower.
The concrete raft for Sama Tower's foundation was poured between 22 and 23 March 2007 by Dubai Contracting Company and Ready Mix Beton: about 10,500 m3 of concrete placed without interruption, a new record for a continuously poured raft. The previous record was also held by Ready Mix Beton.
