Badakhshan Province

Badakhshan is a province in northeastern Afghanistan that includes high mountain ranges, deep valleys, and river corridors. The terrain ranges from snow-covered peaks in the north to drier valleys in the south, stretching along the borders with three neighboring countries.

For centuries, caravan routes passed through this province, connecting Central Asia with South Asia and the Middle East. The area was known for its gemstone deposits and attracted traders from distant regions seeking lapis lazuli and rubies.

The region has carried its name for centuries and is home to communities speaking different Iranian languages and dialects. In local markets across Fayzabad and other towns, traders sell carpets, jewelry, and goods that show traditional craft techniques.

Access to many parts of this province depends on mountain roads that may be blocked by snow in winter. Fayzabad serves as the capital and starting point for travel to more remote valleys and villages.

At the border with Pakistan rises the highest peak in the country, a mountain over 7400 meters (24300 feet) high that is rarely climbed by alpinists. The province also shelters high-altitude pastures where Kyrgyz herders live with their flocks year-round.
