Tepelena, town in Albania
Tepelena is a small town in southeastern Albania, situated on a hillside overlooking the Vjosa River valley. The town center features narrow stone-paved streets, old stone houses with terracotta roofs, and the remains of a fortress that once dominated the settlement.
The town served as an important administrative and military center under Ali Pasha Tepelena in the 18th century as Ottoman power declined in the region. In the 20th century, Tepelena hosted an internment camp built by Italian forces during World War II and later used by the Albanian communist government.
Tepelena takes its name from Ali Pasha, the historical ruler whose legacy remains central to local identity today. The town shows a blend of Ottoman and Albanian traditions in its narrow stone streets, old buildings, and the way people gather at markets and festivals to keep their customs alive.
The town is easy to explore on foot since most sites are close together and the old center is compact. The best time to visit is May through October when weather is warm and dry, with smaller crowds in late spring making sightseeing more relaxed.
Nearby is the Blue Eye of Tepelena, a large clear pool with brilliant blue water that is popular with locals and visitors but far less crowded than similar sites near the coast. The pool offers a peaceful spot for swimming and relaxing surrounded by natural landscape.
