Spaç Prison, Former political prison in Orosh, Albania
Spaç is a former prison complex in Mirditë with multiple concrete buildings, guard towers, and isolation cells measuring approximately 1 by 1.5 meters (3 by 5 feet). The layout reflects the restricted environment designed to limit inmate movement and enforce control.
The facility was established in 1968 under Communist rule and operated until 1991. Prisoners were forced to work in copper mines under harsh conditions, making it a key symbol of the repression system.
The prison represents a period of political persecution in Albania, where intellectuals and dissidents were held captive. Visitors can see the cramped cells and guard towers that reflect this dark chapter.
The site is located about two hours from Tirana airport and visitors can explore the buildings with guided tours that explain the historical context. Booking a guided visit is recommended to gain full understanding of the location and its significance.
A digital reconstruction project launched in 2019 made the prison accessible online, allowing virtual exploration of the site. This digitalization enabled people worldwide to explore the complex without visiting in person.
