Lake Ulza, Artificial lake in Albania
Lake Ulza is a man-made body of water created by building a dam on the Mat River. The water spreads across a hilly area surrounded by mountains and framed by small forests.
The lake was created in 1957 through damming the Mat River. Since then it has served in water management, hydroelectric power generation, and flood control for the surrounding region.
The lake carries the name Ulza or Ulëz from the local region. Visitors see traditional fishing practices and simple boats that local people have used for generations.
The lake is best visited during warmer months when the water is suitable for swimming, fishing, and kayaking. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, and use licensed boat services for activities on the water.
The lake is part of the protected Ulza-Shkopet Natural Park and hosts many bird species and aquatic wildlife. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts visit particularly to observe different species in their natural habitat.
