Royal Tombs of Selca e Poshtme
Royal Tombs of Selca e Poshtme, Archaeological site near Pogradec, Albania
The Royal Tombs of Selca e Poshtme contain five monumental structures carved into rock formations along the Shkumbin River at 1040 meters elevation.
The tombs, dating from the 4th to 1st centuries BC, belonged to Illyrian kings and formed part of the ancient city of Pelion near the Roman Via Egnatia.
The burial chambers display Ionic architectural elements and contained numerous artifacts, including weapons and jewelry that reflect Illyrian funeral traditions.
Visitors can reach the archaeological site through the village of Selce e Poshtme, which became part of Pogradec municipality after the 2015 local government reform.
The complex features a theater-like structure in Tomb II that served for conducting ceremonial rituals associated with the deceased Illyrian rulers.
