Patoku Lagoon, Protected coastal lagoon in Lezhë County, Albania.
Patoku Lagoon is a shallow, protected coastal lagoon on the Adriatic coast in Lezhë County, Albania. Sandy shores and reed beds line its edges, and the water is calm and shallow throughout most of its extent.
The lagoon took shape thousands of years ago as tectonic shifts slowly reshaped the Adriatic coastline in this part of Albania. It has been used by fishing communities since early settlement in the region and was designated a protected area in more recent decades.
Local fishing families still work the water using traditional methods, and their small boats are a common sight along the shore. This daily presence gives the place a working, lived-in feel that visitors notice right away.
The lagoon is best reached by car, as public transport connections in the area are limited. Spring and autumn offer the clearest water and the most activity from birds, making those seasons a good time to visit.
The bottom of the lagoon is covered with dense seagrass meadows that shelter and feed many species of fish. This underwater vegetation was one of the main reasons the area received protected status.
