Areni-1 cave

The Areni-1 cave system sits along limestone cliffs near the Arpa River, featuring multiple chambers with archaeological excavation sections throughout its interior.

The cave complex, first investigated in 2007, contains burial sites and artifacts from the Copper Age period between 5000 and 4000 BCE.

Archaeologists discovered evidence of ancient winemaking practices, including a wine press, fermentation vats, and storage vessels dating back over 6,000 years.

Visitors can access the cave complex through guided tours that explain the ancient winemaking process and display locations of significant archaeological findings.

Scientists found the world's oldest leather shoe and preserved brain tissue from the Copper Age within the cave's naturally cold environment.
