Lake Sevan, Freshwater lake in Gegharkunik Province, Armenia

Lake Sevan extends across 1,242 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,900 meters, containing two sections known as Maly Sevan and Bolshoy Sevan.

The water level decreased by 20 meters during the Soviet period due to irrigation projects, leading to the construction of water diversion tunnels in the 1950s.

The Sevanavank monastery complex, built by King Ashot I, stands on a peninsula that was originally an island before the lake water levels dropped.

Twenty-eight rivers feed into Lake Sevan, while only the Hrazdan River drains from it, with ninety percent of water loss occurring through natural evaporation.

The lake basin comprises one-sixth of Armenia's total territory and produces eighty percent of the country's crayfish and ninety percent of its fish.
