Saint Mariane Church of Ashtarak, Medieval church in Ashtarak, Armenia

Saint Mariane Church in Ashtarak is a medieval religious building with stone walls, an octagonal drum, and a cruciform interior located along the Kasagh River valley. The structure displays characteristic features of Armenian architectural tradition and sits at approximately 1110 meters elevation.

The church is first documented in 1281, though it was built a few years earlier; a men's monastery existed here until the 16th century. The bell tower above the south portal was added in 1836 (some sources say 1838). Restoration in 1950 renewed the stone facing of the façades and drum and replaced the roof with flat tiles.

The church is dedicated to Saint Marina of Antioch. A carved 13th-century khachkar stands on a pedestal beside it, and across the road a modern khachkar commemorates the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide and the Spitak earthquake. Until the 16th century a men's monastery operated here.

The church stands on Smbat Shahaziz Street, between Perch Proshyan and Parpetsi streets, but the easiest approach is across the open ground southeast of the complex. The main portal is on the south wall, and a second entrance opens in the west wall. A 13th-century carved khachkar stands on a pedestal beside the church.
