The Modern Art Museum of Yerevan occupies a building at 7 Mashtots Avenue in the Kentron district. Its halls hold paintings and sculptures from the museum's founding collection of 1960s Armenian artists, among them Minas Avetisian, Hakob Hakobian and Rudolf Khachatrian, alongside later donations such as works by Emil Kazaz given in 2004 and sculptures by Garen Bedrosyan acquired in 2010.
The museum was founded in 1972 and was the first specialized modern art museum across the entire territory of the Soviet Union. The collection developed through direct donations from artists at a time when modern artistic expressions faced restrictions under socialist realism policies.
The museum's name in Armenian is Երևանի Ժամանակակից Արվեստի Թանգարան, and its collection began with 1960s works donated by the artists themselves, among them Minas Avetisian, Hakob Hakobian and Gayane Khachaturian. In the 1980s a younger generation, including Sargis Hamalbashian and Marine Dilanian, added their own pieces. Visitors today see both groups side by side.
The museum stands at Mashtots Avenue 7 in the Kentron district, and its director is Nune Avetisyan. It is a partner of the Yerevan Card programme, so holders of that card can use it for entry. Allow time for the permanent collection and any temporary shows.
The original collection formed when artistic freedom was highly restricted and artists donated their works directly to the museum. This makes the collection a testament to artistic courage and determination under difficult circumstances.
