Ակնալիճի եզդիական տաճար, Yazidi temple in Aknalich village, Armenia.
Ziarat, also called Sultan Ezid, is a Yazidi temple in the village of Aknalich, Armavir Province, Armenia. It has a traditional conical dome built of stone and faced with marble, covers 40 square metres and holds 30 worshippers. A refectory for 2,000 people stands nearby.
The temple was completed in 2019 and is the first Yazidi place of worship of its kind in Armenia. It was built to give a permanent religious center to a community that had settled in the country over the course of the 20th century after facing persecution elsewhere.
The temple is the main place where Yazidis in Armenia gather to pray and celebrate their festivals together. Visitors can observe the ornaments and symbols on the building, which carry references to Yazidi tradition.
The temple sits in Aknalich, north of Yerevan, and is most easily reached by car. It is worth checking in advance whether a religious event is planned for the day you visit, as the site draws larger crowds during festivals.
The temple was funded by businessman Mirza Choloevich Sloyan, who conceived the idea after visiting Lalish, the only other Yazidi temple, in 2011. Spiritual leaders Mir Tahsin Beg and Akhtiyare Marge gave it the name Sultan Ezid. During a visit by a delegation of Yazidi clergy, Mir Tahsin Beg presented the Armenian Catholicos with an 18th-century Armenian manuscript, Avetaran.
