Royal Palace of Nukuʻalofa

The Royal Palace stands near the waterfront of Nuku'alofa, featuring wooden architecture and expanded structures that maintain its original 1867 building at its core.

Constructed in 1867, the palace gained additional security measures in 1990 with a three-meter-high grid fence replacing the original sacred stone barrier.

Tongan poets traditionally avoid naming the palace directly in their works, instead using allegorical references such as Fanga-tapu, Loto-'ā, and 'Ā-maka.

While the palace interior remains closed to visitors, the exterior and grounds are visible from the waterfront area of Nuku'alofa.

The palace has grown to five times its initial size while preserving the original structure, serving as the center for all sovereign functions in Tonga.
