'Eua National Park

Eua National Park is a protected area on Eua Island, Tonga, featuring steep coastal cliffs with caves and deep chasms cut into the rock. Dense tropical rainforest covers the landscape and provides habitat for local wildlife and plants.

European explorer Abel Tasman mapped this location in 1643 and called it Middelburg Island during his Pacific voyage. The island later became part of Tonga's protected areas in recent times.

In Tongan tradition, the god Maui fished these islands from the ocean at this location, giving the place deep spiritual meaning for local people. The stories told here connect visitors to ancient beliefs that shaped island culture.

Several marked trails wind through the rainforest and along the cliffs, and visitors can hire local guides for organized treks. Sturdy footwear and rain gear are recommended as paths pass through wet terrain and steep sections.

From June to November, humpback whales swim close to the rocky shores while seabirds circle above the cliffs in thermal currents. This seasonal event offers visitors a chance to witness ocean wildlife and birdlife in action.
