Avarua

Avarua is the capital of the Cook Islands and sits along Rarotonga's northern coast. The town contains government offices, a market area, and local shops set against green mountains rising behind.

Early Polynesian settlers chose this location as their main trading center, and it later became the administrative seat of the Cook Islands. This role shaped how the place grew and developed over time.

The Sir Geoffrey Henry National Culture Centre displays objects that show how island people lived and worked across generations. You can see traditional crafts and items that communities still value and reference today.

You can reach the town by flying into Rarotonga International Airport or arriving by boat at Avatiu Harbour. Most places of interest are walkable from the town center.

Offshore waters hold the wreck of the cargo ship SS Maitai, which struck a reef in 1916. This sunken vessel sits as a reminder of early maritime history around the islands.
