Orona, Coral atoll in Phoenix Islands, Kiribati
Orona is a coral atoll in the Phoenix Islands, formed by a narrow strip of land encircling a central lagoon. The lagoon measures approximately 9 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide, located in the Pacific Ocean.
The atoll was documented in 1840 by the United States Exploring Expedition under Commander Charles Wilkes and was originally named Hull Island. The name was later changed to Orona, reflecting shifts in Pacific cartography during that period.
Archaeological findings reveal ancient Polynesian settlements on Orona, including stone structures and remnants of traditional Pacific Islander communities on the eastern section.
The atoll is part of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, established in 2006 and expanded in 2008, which covers eight protected coral formations. Visitors should note that its remote Pacific location and protected status limit general accessibility.
The western section of the atoll is covered with dense coconut palm growth, while the rest shows a mix of scrub forest and grass vegetation. This varying plant life reflects the different environmental conditions across the island.
