Nukunonu, Coral atoll in Tokelau, South Pacific Ocean.
Nukunonu is a coral atoll in the Pacific with about 30 small islands surrounding a large central lagoon connected by coral formations. The islands form a ring approximately 11 kilometers wide.
A British ship discovered the atoll in 1791 and named it after a British nobleman. The islands remained difficult to reach and stayed relatively isolated for a long time.
The community follows traditional customs that shape daily life and how decisions are made together. These practices remain central to how people interact and solve problems.
The atoll has no proper anchorage facilities, making deliveries and supply difficult to arrange. Visitors should be prepared for limited accessibility, as boats may not always be able to dock.
The eastern section is an important bird sanctuary with colonies of brown noddies, black noddies, and white terns thriving there. This area offers visitors a chance to see rare seabirds in their natural home.
