Puelo River, River system in Llanquihue Province, Chile
The Puelo River is a river system that flows northwest from Argentina through the Andes to the Reloncaví Estuary in Patagonia. The waterway passes through a landscape shaped by lakes and tributaries as it winds toward the coast.
The valley remained mostly unsettled until the early 1900s, when farmers began establishing livestock and dairy operations in the area. These settlements became the foundation for the region's ongoing rural economy.
Local families along the Puelo River maintain traditional farming practices, raising livestock and producing dairy products for markets in Puerto Montt.
The area is accessible by bus from Puerto Montt with multiple daily departures and stops along the way including Puerto Varas, Ensenada, and Ralún. Visiting during warmer months makes the experience more comfortable for exploring the landscape.
The river system creates a succession of three connected lakes as it flows through the landscape. These bodies of water form naturally due to the way the waterway works with the terrain, making the journey distinctive.
