Coliseo Municipal Antonio Azurmendy Riveros, Indoor sports arena in Valdivia, Chile
The Coliseo Municipal Antonio Azurmendy Riveros is an indoor sports arena in the center of Valdivia, Chile, built primarily for basketball. It has tiered seating around a central court and can also be used for other sporting events and public gatherings.
The arena opened in 1966 to host an extraordinary men's world basketball championship, putting Valdivia on the international sports map for the first time. It went on to welcome other international tournaments in the following decades.
Locals call this arena "La Catedral del Basquetbol", which shows how central basketball is to daily life in Valdivia. During matches, the crowd is loud and familiar, giving the place a neighborhood feel rather than that of a big commercial venue.
The arena sits at the corner of Avenida Pedro Montt and Errázuriz, close to the city center and easy to reach on foot or by bus. Opening times depend on scheduled events, so it is worth checking what is on before you go.
The arena hosted the 2007 FIBA AmeriCup Women's tournament, welcoming national teams from across the Americas to its court. That makes it one of the very few venues in provincial Chile to have staged a women's international tournament at that level.
