Oncol Park, Private protected area in Valdivia Region, Chile.
Oncol Park is a protected area in the Valdivia Region that preserves a section of temperate rainforest. The site features dense vegetation with multiple forest layers, from the canopy to the forest floor, supporting a variety of plant and animal species adapted to this moist coastal mountain environment.
The area was established in 1989 as a conservation initiative and protects forest that survived past glacial periods unchanged. This preserved woodland provides researchers and visitors with a glimpse of what the landscape looked like before significant climate shifts affected the region.
The name Oncol comes from a tree species native to this forest and important to local indigenous culture. Today, the place remains a space where visitors can directly experience how the temperate rainforest functions as a living ecosystem with its layered vegetation and interconnected species.
The park is located some distance from Valdivia city and is most easily reached by car. Visitors should wear proper hiking boots since trails pass through damp forest areas where surfaces can be slippery.
From a high point in the park, visitors on clear days can spot several volcanoes that rise along the border between Chile and Argentina in the distance. These distant views stand out because they offer a perspective beyond the immediate forest environment most visitors focus on during their walks.
