Punta Curiñanco, Protected coastal area in Curiñanco, Chile.
Punta Curiñanco is a protected coastal area encompassing temperate rainforest with coastal shrublands, wetlands, and rocky shores along the northern end of Curiñanco beach. The reserve combines these different natural habitats within a single ecosystem that supports diverse wildlife.
Management of this coastal area began formally in 2000 under the National Committee for the Defense of Flora and Fauna. The organization has worked to establish conservation standards and protect the biodiversity of the region since then.
The ancient Olivillo forest holds spiritual meaning for the Mapuche people as an ancestral burial place. Walking through it, you sense the deep connection between the indigenous community and this woodland.
The reserve is accessible via established trails and viewpoints positioned throughout the area for observation. Wear sturdy footwear as paths are uneven and some sections have steep elevation changes.
This protected space shelters rare animals like pudús and guiñas that are difficult to spot elsewhere. These small mammals are adapted to forest environments and occasionally appear in quieter sections of the reserve.
