Área marina y costera protegida Lafken Mapu Lahual

The Lafken Mapu Lahual Marine Protected Area spans 32 kilometers of coastline between Punta Tiburon and Punta Loberia, including one nautical mile from high tide.

The Chilean government established this marine protected area in December 2005 through Decree 517, signed by the Ministry of National Defense and Marine Subsecretariat.

Local Mapuche Huilliche communities maintain their traditional connection to the area through sustainable fishing practices and natural resource management.

The protected area allows non-extractive activities such as nature tourism while maintaining restricted access zones to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems.

The site contains 704 marine species, 89 continental water species, and 118 native flora species within the Valdivian temperate forest region.
