Valdivian Coastal Reserve, Protected coastal area in southern Chile.
The Valdivian Coastal Reserve is a protected area along the Pacific coast in southern Chile featuring temperate rainforest. The forest is home to ancient trees and diverse plant life that form a complex ecosystem.
The land was used by a logging company until it went bankrupt. Conservation groups then acquired the property and established the reserve.
Local fishing villages and Mapuche communities practice their traditional ways in this area and manage forest resources sustainably. You can see evidence of these practices during walks through the reserve.
Access is open to the public with marked trails and parking throughout the area. Information signs are posted along the routes to guide visitors.
Two tree species thrive here for remarkably long lifespans: the Olivillo ages for centuries and the Alerce can live for thousands of years. These trees rank among the oldest living organisms on Earth.
