Education: Past, Present and Future, Mosaic at Ministry of Education, Chile
Education: Past, Present and Future is a ceramic tile and acrylic paint mural at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Chile. The artwork spans approximately 45 meters (150 feet) in width and just under 2 meters (6.5 feet) in height, making it a large-scale installation on the building's wall.
The artwork was completed in 2009 by Marco Hernandez during a period when Chile was focused on educational reform and student rights. This time marked important public debates about the state of the education system and what young people needed.
The mural shows different periods of educational development through symbolic images, linking historical teaching methods with modern learning approaches. Viewers can recognize scenes from various time periods in the ceramic tiles that reflect how classrooms and teaching have changed.
The mural is permanently displayed on the exterior of the ministry building and is visible from the street, so you can view it without needing entry permission. Since it is an outdoor installation, it is best seen in daylight and can be visited at any time of day.
The work uses ceramic tiles rather than just painted surfaces, which gives the mural greater durability and visual depth. The combination of ceramic and acrylic allows the artist to create different textures and effects that appear to shift as light changes throughout the day.
