Shopping Center Punta del Sol, Dead mall in Rancagua, Chile
Shopping Center Punta del Sol was a retail complex in Rancagua built with a Z-shaped floor plan to accommodate major stores at both ends. The facility housed numerous shops, dining options, and entertainment venues within its multi-level structure.
The center opened in 1990 as the first shopping mall outside Santiago, backed by local investors. It closed after 9 years when competition from other retail developments made it unsustainable.
The mall served as a gathering place where residents came to shop, eat, and watch films together as a social activity. It represented a shift in how people shopped, moving away from downtown stores to a dedicated shopping space outside the city center.
The site is no longer accessible to the public as the facility has been closed for decades. Visitors can only view the exterior structure from outside.
The building was designed by architect Jaime Bendersky, who also created the notable Mall Parque Arauco, using advanced construction techniques for its time. The complex exemplified modern retail design principles of the early 1990s in Chile.
