Cerro Pachón

Cerro Pachón is an astronomical facility with multiple large telescopes positioned high in the Chilean Andes mountains. The complex sits at about 2,700 meters elevation where thin air and dark skies allow for clear views of distant stars and galaxies.

Scientists first began observing from this mountain location in the 1960s as part of international research efforts. Advanced telescopes were constructed in later decades to take advantage of the excellent conditions and continue making astronomical discoveries.

The observatory brings together scientists from around the world to study the night sky together. This place represents how nations collaborate to understand the universe and share discoveries.

Visitors should start from the city of Vicuña and prepare for the high mountain elevation and cool climate. Adjusting to the altitude takes time, so arriving early and allowing yourself to acclimate is advisable.

This site is home to one of the largest telescopes in the southern hemisphere with an 8-meter mirror. An additional massive telescope project is currently under construction nearby to conduct unprecedented sky surveys in coming years.
