Tumba de Gabriela Mistral, Nobel laureate monument in Montegrande, Chile.
Gabriela Mistral's tomb is a white stone monument positioned in a circular plaza overlooking the mountains of the Elqui Valley. It features interpretative plaques that document her contributions to Chilean literature and education.
The tomb was built in 1960 when Gabriela's remains were transferred from Santiago to her native Elqui region. The relocation followed her written instructions and made this place a reflection of her deep connection to the area.
The monument honors the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, earning recognition in 1945. She became a symbol of female creativity and education throughout the region.
The tomb is open daily to visitors and easily accessible from the main road in Montegrande. Visiting in the morning is advisable, as the sun highlights the white monument most clearly.
The tomb also contains the remains of Juan Miguel Godoy, known as Yin-Yin, added in 2005. This detail reveals the personal and human side of this national monument.
