Llanos de Challe National Park, Nature reserve in Huasco Province, Chile
Llanos de Challe is a nature reserve on the Pacific coast in the Atacama Region, featuring white sand beaches, coastal wetlands, and semi-arid terrain. The landscape stretches across thousands of hectares and blends sandy shores with dry inland areas.
The park was created in the 1990s to protect the coastal desert and its unique ecosystem. This decision recognized the importance of preserving this landscape for the Atacama Region.
The park contains remains of ancient settlements that show how indigenous peoples lived here long ago. These traces reveal early connections between humans and this coastal desert landscape.
The area is open during daylight hours with walking trails through the landscape, so bring comfortable shoes and plenty of water. Since the region is very dry, sun protection is essential, especially on the exposed beaches.
The park is home to a significant population of guanacos, wild relatives of llamas that are uncommon in this region. A rare flower called Garra de León also grows here, adding to the area's biological diversity.
