Iglesia de San Pedro, Huasco, Parish church in Huasco, Chile.
San Pedro Church is a parish church with modern architecture in Huasco, Chile, featuring twenty-one stained glass windows. These windows depict scenes from Saint Peter's life and fill the interior with colored light.
The current building was constructed between 1976 and 1980, replacing an earlier adobe and wooden church from 1890. The previous structure had served the community for nearly a century before being replaced.
The ship-like form of the church reflects the fishing community's connection to the ocean and appears throughout the town. Locals see this design as an expression of their maritime identity and daily connection to the sea.
The church is best visited on foot, as it sits centrally in Huasco and is easy to reach from the main square. Annual celebrations for Saint Peter occur on the Monday nearest to June 29 in the Arturo Prat main square.
Architects Hugo Chacaltana and Lucy Sims designed the building with nautical elements woven throughout its structural design. These architectural details connect the physical form to the region's maritime history in unexpected ways.
