Auquihuato rises 4,980 meters above sea level and features a cone shape that formed on the southern margin of a Pliocene volcanic plateau.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru initiated monitoring activities of Auquihuato in 2019 to study its geological characteristics and potential seismic movements.

Local communities in the Ayacucho Region maintain connections to the volcanic landscapes through generations of stories and traditional knowledge.

Access to Auquihuato requires preparation for high-altitude conditions and coordination with local authorities due to its remote location in the Andes.

The volcano produced a lava flow extending 12 kilometers southward with a thickness of 50 meters and displays distinctive pahoehoe textures.
