Sara Sara, Stratovolcano in Parinacochas Province, Peru.

Sara Sara is a stratovolcano in Peru's Andes that rises above 5,500 meters and is built from multiple layers of lava flows and domes. The mountain's structure shows how volcanic material accumulated in distinct phases to create its current form.

The volcano formed through multiple phases of activity during the Pleistocene and experienced its most recent eruption roughly 14,000 years ago. This extended history of volcanic action shaped the mountain's geological development across tens of thousands of years.

The mountain holds spiritual significance in Andean traditions and represents a sacred location in the landscape for local communities. Its name comes from indigenous language, reflecting connections to the surrounding region that remain visible today.

The nearby settlement of Pausa serves as the main starting point for anyone planning to explore or study the mountain. Access to the area requires proper preparation and equipment suitable for high altitude conditions.

The mountain preserves traces of two glacial periods, known as Sara Sara I and Sara Sara II, that profoundly shaped its present form. Archaeological digs at the summit uncovered remains of an Inca sacred site, revealing clues about ancient mountain rituals.
