Suri

Suri is a mountain summit in Peru's Puno Region located in the Andes, reaching 5,400 meters in elevation. Its steep slopes create local elevation changes exceeding 300 meters, shaping the rugged terrain of this high-altitude landscape.

The mountain has long served as a natural boundary marker in El Collao Province, located northeast of Lake Wilaquta. Its geographic position made it an important landmark for people navigating the region.

The name Suri comes from Aymara and Quechua languages spoken by local people, referring to rhea birds that live in the surrounding region. These animal names remain part of how communities identify places across the Andes today.

The climate is very cold, with temperatures ranging from minus 1 to 14 degrees Celsius, so quality mountaineering equipment and altitude acclimatization are essential. Visitors should allow themselves time to adjust to the thin air and bring proper protective gear.

The landscape displays distinct geological formations visible in satellite imagery, with snow-covered sections contrasting sharply against dark rock faces. These visual differences result from varying rock compositions and weathering processes at this altitude.
