Khapia, Mountain summit in Puno Department, Peru.
Khapia is a mountain summit in the Andes in the Puno Department of Peru, close to the border with Bolivia. The peak rises sharply above the surrounding high plateau and can be seen from a great distance.
The mountain has held deep meaning for Andean communities for centuries as a sacred place. In 2011, the Peruvian state gave it official recognition as National Cultural Heritage.
Local communities view Khapia as an Apu, a mountain spirit in Andean tradition. This spiritual role remains alive in ceremonies and daily practices throughout the region.
The best starting point for the ascent is the town of Yunguyo, from which you can reach the base of the mountain. The trail crosses open highland terrain, so good physical condition and gear suited to high altitude are needed.
Khapia sits across four different districts, which makes it a rare geographic boundary point in the region. On clear days, Lake Titicaca is visible from the summit, lying only a short distance away.
