Club de la Union, Private social club in Plaza Mayor, Peru
Club de la Union is a private social club in central Lima, situated at the corner of Jiron de la Union and Jiron Huallaga. The club also operates a second facility in the Santa Rosa District, which includes beach access and sports areas.
The club was founded in 1868, with admiral Miguel Grau and colonel Francisco Bolognesi among its early members, both of whom later became national heroes during the War of the Pacific. The current building opened in 1942 and has since been recognized as a national heritage monument.
The building stands directly on Plaza Mayor, next to the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and the Municipal Palace. This position makes it a visible part of the heart of Lima's historic center.
The main building is within easy walking distance of Plaza Mayor in central Lima and can be seen from the street. Since this is a private club, access to the interior is generally not open to the public.
Grau and Bolognesi joined the club before going to war, and both became two of Peru's most remembered military figures. The fact that they were members of the same club before those events is a detail that most visitors passing by the building would not suspect.
