Equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro, Bronze memorial in Parque de La Muralla, Lima, Peru.

The equestrian monument to Francisco Pizarro is a bronze sculpture in Parque de La Muralla in Lima that shows the conquistador mounted on horseback wearing armor and holding a raised sword. The figure stands on a base in the central area of the park, near the Government Palace and easily visible to all who walk through.

The monument was unveiled in 1935 to mark four hundred years since Lima was founded. It originally stood at Lima Cathedral before being moved to its current location in the park in 2003.

The statue shows different ways of looking at Peru's colonial past and makes visitors think about how history is displayed. People here discuss different views of national identity and what monuments should mean today.

The monument sits at ground level in Parque de La Muralla near the Government Palace in central Lima and is easy to reach on foot. The park is open to visitors and the location is well connected to the rest of downtown.

This bronze sculpture is one of three identical versions created by American artist Charles Cary Rumsey. The other copies stand in Buffalo in the United States and in Trujillo in Spain, giving the work an international story.
