Casa de la Literatura Peruana, Cultural center in Lima District, Peru
Casa de la Literatura Peruana is a cultural center housed in a three-story building with a symmetrical facade and classical pilasters, containing multiple exhibition rooms. The space includes an extensive library and research facilities dedicated entirely to Peruvian literature.
The building was constructed in 1912 as Desamparados railway station, serving as the departure point for train routes heading into the central Andes. This former railway facility was later repurposed as a literary space while retaining its original architectural character.
The center showcases Peruvian literature and its authors, showing how their works have shaped the nation's identity across different periods. Visitors can trace which literary movements defined various eras and understand the ways local writers influenced society.
The center offers guided tours in Spanish and English that explain exhibitions and provide context on Peruvian literary history. Visitors can take time to explore the library and research materials, especially if they want to dive deeper into the subject.
The building preserves the original ticket booth from its railway station days, still visible and reminding visitors of the former transportation hub. A distinctive feature is the Art Nouveau stained glass skylight integrated into the modern exhibition spaces, bringing natural light through the central atrium.
