Peruvian Amazon, Vast rainforest region in eastern Peru.

The Peruvian Amazon is a vast rainforest region covering most of eastern Peru, stretching from the Andean foothills down to the lowland plains near the Brazilian border. Thick canopy layers rise above winding rivers and quiet oxbow lakes, while open clearings and muddy riverbanks create natural breaks in the otherwise continuous green cover.

Franciscan missionaries built settlements in Gran Pajonal during the 1730s until an Asháninka uprising reclaimed control for over a century. Later, the rubber boom brought severe disruption to large parts of the region, leaving traces that persist today.

Indigenous groups including the Aguaruna, Cocama-Cocamilla, and Urarina maintain traditional practices and deep knowledge of forest resources in isolated communities.

Puerto Maldonado serves as the main starting point, with boats departing for most lodges and protected areas upriver or downriver. Trails are often muddy and humidity stays high year-round, so lightweight quick-dry clothing is advisable.

Nearly half of all bird species recorded in the country live here across different forest layers and along riverbanks. Some rivers shift color between brown, green, and near-black depending on sediment load and season.
