Casa Cohen, Art Nouveau commercial building in Historic Center of Iquitos, Peru.

Casa Cohen is a single-storey building on Jirón Próspero in the Historic Center of Iquitos. Its facade is lined with a row of portals topped by semi-circular arches, and the whole is covered by a roof of glazed tiles painted light blue. The row of portals gave its current occupant, Supermercados Los Portales, its name.

Casa Cohen was built by Jaime Cohen, one of the first Jews to arrive in Iquitos, in 1896. During the rubber boom it operated as a trading house that imported European goods and exported rubber. It stands on Jirón Próspero in the Historic Center of Iquitos.

The supermarket inside takes its name, Los Portales, from the row of portals along the facade. Jaime Cohen, one of the first Jews to reach Iquitos in 1896, gave the building his family name, still used for the house today.

Casa Cohen stands on Jirón Próspero in the Centro Histórico of Iquitos, a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas and the river port. The single-story facade with its row of semicircular arches and blue glazed tiles faces the street, so it can be seen on foot at any hour. The interior is a working supermarket, open during its business hours.

Owner Jaime Cohen was one of the few Jewish merchants who settled in the Peruvian Amazon during the rubber boom. His investment in this building shows the economic opportunities the region offered to immigrants at that time.
