Casa Morey

Casa Morey is a Victorian-style building from Iquitos' prosperous era, displaying intricate carved woodwork, high ceilings, and original tiles on walls and floors. The spaces are generously proportioned and reveal how wealthy residents lived in the Amazon region.

The building arose during the rubber boom of the 19th century, when wealth from South America flowed into Iquitos and the city grew rapidly. European architects and craftsmen arrived to build for wealthy merchants who wanted homes designed in their familiar style.

The building reflects a time when European merchants shaped the city's character and brought their way of life into its architecture. Its spaces tell the story of this blend between local tradition and foreign influence that defined Iquitos.

The building is centrally located and walkable from downtown, with shops and restaurants nearby. Visitors should note that the interior has multiple levels and steep stairs, so care is needed when exploring.

The tiles were imported from England and Belgium, showing the long trade routes possible during the rubber boom. Such imported materials were a sign of wealth and showed the entire city who was rich enough to afford them.
